More than a year since I've reported on my strolling in the Glucose Garden. That doesn't mean I don't live in the Glucose Garden or that haven't paid attention to blood sugar and the state of my feet -- I have. I just got tired of thinking about them.

Tired of feet matters meant learning from my doctor that the foot splint I wore an hour night and morning to move the 3rd toe, right foot, straighter and more aligned to the 4th. It did its job, and I could have kept the rented splint (with thanks to Medicare) after 13 months in case anything went wrong. Dr. Polun and I decided nothing was going to. Goodbye, splint.

I'm seeing Dr. P every 4 months now, and everything is good. I watch my feet for sores, am sure to dry them carefully after a shower and before donning socks and shoes. I have a new set of orthotics and "diabetes shoes" covered by Medicare to provide more support for the feet. They're not chic, but they are comfortable, and make walking good distances comfortable. And they fit my feet so they don't rub, cause sores -- a bane of diabetes management.

Tired of glucose matters meant, over the past winter, gaining weight -- as many people did. When spring came, we'd share numbers in the hallway. 10, 12 pounds. Not a good move. for me, 17 lbs.

It was very cold, I hibernated, and gave in to longing for carbs, fats, salt. I lived inside a bag of Dorritos.

Home not sweet home.

Once the weather got warmer, in May, I started to take off the weight gain. Now I've taken off 10 of the 17 lbs. It's awesome August, the gorgeous August of 2014. I'm beginning to make plans for the cold weather returning ahead.

Fortunately, my blood glucose has stabilized at a healthy level as long as I eat a vegetable/fruit/whole grains/protein diet. Giving in to sugar, fat and salt was the icy path to winter gain. Not giving in is the way to better health.
